Willows

FOR SSAA CHOIR WITH PIANO & FLUTE
WORDS AND MUSIC BY JOANNIE ING

A piece inspired by the poem “Willows” (柳) by Chinese poet Li Ye ( 李冶). It is an original English setting of the poetic text using the major pentatonic scale as its harmonic palette.

Performed by the York University Women’s Chorus, directed by Dr. Lisette Canton

Lovely willows along the winding stream
Shadows over the aquamarine
Eastern breeze blows colours yearly green
In spring, of home she does dream.

Low hanging leaves and oars on the shore
Branches framing upper floors
Graceful trunks make a beautiful scene
Scattered blossoms on emerald green.
